- Secret Codes in Printers May Allow Government Tracking, October 25, 2005. Tiny dots produced by some laser printers are a secret code that can allow the government to track down counterfeiters, dissents, or anyone else the government decides to go after, raising the hackles of privacy advocates. ‘The Electronic Frontier Foundation said its researchers recently broke the code behind the tiny tracking dots and said the US Secret Service confirmed that the tracking is part of a deal struck with selected color laser printer manufacturers to identify counterfeiters. “We’ve found that the dots from at least one line of printers encode the date and time your document was printed, as well as the serial number of the printer,” said EFF researcher Seth Schoen. EFF said the yellow dots are less than one millimeter in diameter and can be seen only with a blue light, magnifying glass or microscope… EFF broke a code in a Xerox DocuColor printer and identified other codes in printers from Canon, Brother, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Epson and other makers.’[3]
- Racial Discrimination, April 10, 2008. A class action lawsuit was brought against Xerox Corporation by a group “comprised of current and former African-American sales representatives, who alleged that the company racially discriminated against them. The suit claimed that the company practiced race discrimination with respect to sales territory assignments, quotas and compensation. In a recent announcement, company spokespersons revealed that the company has reached a settlement in the class action suit, resolving all allegations and pending litigation.” Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Xerox Corp. agreed to pay $12 million to the group.”[4]
Political Influence
- In 2007, Xerox spent $940,000 for lobbying.[5]
Business Ethics
- Xerox: Copying Enron, May 2002. “Xerox has settled a major suit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in April in connection with a wide-ranging, four-year scheme to defraud investors. The SEC’s complaint alleges that from at least 1997 through 2000, Xerox used a variety of what it called “accounting actions” and “accounting opportunities” to meet or exceed Wall Street expectations and disguise its true operating performance from investors. These actions, most of which violated generally accepted accounting principles, accelerated the company’s recognition of equipment revenue by more than $3 billion and increased its pre-tax earnings by approximately $1.5 billion. Xerox agreed to settle the SEC’s complaint by consenting to the entry of an injunction for violations of the antifraud and other provisions of the federal securities laws, restating its financials for the years 1997 to 2000, agreeing to a special review of its accounting controls, and paying an unprecedented $10 million penalty.”[6]
- Having Their Cake and Eating it Too – The Great Corporate Tax Break, July 6, 2006. A major report released by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions “uncovers the disturbing extent of corporate tax avoidance and evasion and warns that unless governments cease engaging in the race to lower corporate taxes, both industrialized and developing countries will face a major public funding crisis… The report documents the many innovative ways in which companies are escaping their tax obligations, either through exploiting legal loopholes or by simply engaging in illegal behavior… Companies as large as Boeing, Halliburton, Morgan Stanley, Pepsi, Citigroup and Xerox are either incorporated in tax havens or have a large number of subsidiaries there. This allows them to under-report their profits for the purposes of paying tax whilst at the same time benefiting from taxpayer money through government contracts.”[7]
